Never thought that Sony would release a GPS system for a gaming console, but here it is, got my unit yesterday for RM225 at Lowyat Plaza, Kuala Lumpur. Similar to PSP camera 'Chotto Shot', the device is not yet available outside of Japan, except from importers. ![]() The PSP GPS will have a 20-channel reception system with a frequency of 1575.42MHz (L1 ban, C/A code). It would take 40 seconds before it could acquire your position, and refreshes the information about your location every second after that. The positioning precision is 5m, which means that its accuracy in reporting your position will be (at most) 5m from where you're actually standing. ![]() (Packaging box and GPS unit) ![]() (Special case to store your GPS receiver) The first thing that I want to try out was the 'GPS scan recruit' in Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops game. You'll be able to recruit new soldiers through GPS feature that combines virtual espionage and real-world location hunting. ![]() At first, I decided to try out the GPS scan by walking, so I walked from Sg.Wang, but believe it or not, it's not an easy thing to do. I walked until I reached Ampang Park, but still cannot reach my target for recruiting. Then, I decided to do the GPS scan by driving, so last night at 1am, I drove from Kg.Baru to Ampang area (somewhere around Kosas), and recruited 4 soldiers successfully! It took about 1-2 minutes for the GPS receiver to do the trilateration. Trilateration is where the GPS receiver locates four or more of GPS satellites (currently there are 27 GPS satellites orbiting the earth), figure out the distance to each, and use this information to pinpoint our location. ![]() Once the GPS is connected, PSP will act as a radar that you use to find new soldiers in your area. As you can see, the little circles are soldiers that can be recruited. The large circle in the middle, most probably has a radius of about 1km or less. ![]() The screen will refresh every 2 seconds, so you can see whether you're getting closer to your target or away from it. Doing this while driving, you can see the difference faster than doing it while walking. But, you need to be cautious while driving and at the same time looking at the screen. It's better to have a car mount to hold the PSP. ![]() As you get closer, you can zoom in (press Triangle button) to get better detail about exactly where your soldier is. ![]()

When you reach within range of your soldier, you can hear fast beeping sound, and 'Get' message will pop-up on the screen.![]() ![]() This is my 1st soldier that was recruited from GPS scan. I recruited another 3 soldier on the way back to Kg.Baru. ![]() So, overall, I think it's a very interesting concept. Too bad we cannot use the GPS for map navigation. Hopefully, in future, Sony will release the map navigation software (Maplus) for other region too, not only for Japan map. Next stop, going to try out the 'Planetarium Creator Homestar Portable'. Pairing this with the GPS receiver, you get yourself your own astronomic observation tool. Homestar Portable contains information on over 5 million stars, 300 heavenly objects, and over 15 planetarium style shows. And with the GPS receiver, you'll be able to see the stars that are actually over your head. Great feature! |
